Redness or swelling may occur, but it should subside quickly. It is a temporary effect and can be easily treated.

High Intensity Focused Ultrasound, or HIFU, has emerged as one of the popular facelift and body shaping treatment in Singapore that is painless, non-invasive and delivers fast results. For this reason, it is famously known as the “Lunch Hour Face Lift” as you can resume your daily routine after treatment with little fuss.

Ultraformer III
The device used for HIFU is called Ultraformer III – a medical grade CE marked system. Ultraformer III has the ability to penetrate different depths of the skin, notably the upper dermis (1.5mm), lower dermis (3mm) and the SMAS layer (4.5mm) without damaging the epidermis skin layer. The SMAS layer is the key to skin rejuvenation as this is the layer of skin targeted by plastic surgeons. The SMAS layer is located between the muscle and fat tissues, and is pulled back and tightened by surgeons during surgical face lift procedures. With HIFU, no surgery is needed to obtain the same results. This is because highly focused ultrasound energy beams is used to heat up deep skin layers, triggering controlled damage within the skin that signals the body to produce more collagen. As we all know, collagen is the building structure of the skin that is responsible for skin elasticity and firmness.

Wrinkles, enlarged pores and sagging jowls are some of the other aging skin issues that can be treated with HIFU in Singapore. Besides that, wrinkles around delicate areas such the eyes (crow’s feet) can be treated with Ultraformer III’s new MF2 slim cartridge.

For body area concerns, Ultraformer III uses 9mm and 13mm cartridges to blast heat into fat cells, thereby breaking them into small pieces. Once the fat cells are destroyed, your body begins the process of healing. Damaged fat cells are eaten up by macrophages, which then delivers it to the liver to be eliminated out of the body.

Treatment Areas
The popular body areas that can be treated with HIFU are double chins, arms, hips, stomach, thighs and buttocks. HIFU is also suitable for post pregnancy women who are looking to reduce abdominal fat, and even women who wish to contour their overall body shape.
Aside from fat removal, HIFU also tightens loose and sagging skin on the neck, décolletage, arms and knees to get rid of the “papery” skin texture. The SMAS layer, which means superficial muscular aponeurotic system, is a skin layer high in collagen. When heat is administered to this layer via HIFU, collagen production is stimulated to produce firmer skin.

However, HIFU treatments in the past have been known to be uncomfortable as heat emitted from the HIFU devices can go as high as 70 degrees. To minimize discomfort to patients, the new Ultraformer III delivers shorter beams of energy for a quicker and more comfortable session for patients. The average treatment time is 15 to 25 minutes. As a third generation HIFU machine, Ultraformer III utilizes the latest ultrasound technology that makes it more bearable and less painful compared to previous HIFU treatments.

HIFU treatment usually starts with cleansing the face and applying ultrasound gel over the treatment areas. During treatment, you may a dull ache as the HIFU device administers ultrasound. Rest assured that the procedure is safe and non-invasive, as HIFU only targets the deeper skin layers without causing burns or trauma to the skin surface. For more sensitive patients, it may not be completely painless but is still highly tolerable by most people. Numbing cream can also be applied for a more comfortable treatment session.

One important thing to note is, the sensation may differ when HIFU is being administered on different parts of the body and face. You may feel the ultrasound energy pulses more strongly around bony areas where the skin is thinner, such as the forehead, jawline and cheekbones. In some cases, this may manifest as a dull ache post treatment. The good news is, these symptoms usually last up to a week and are generally not excruciatingly painful.

Side Effects
Redness is a common side effect from HIFU, but it is a temporary effect and can be easily treated with calming cream. Patients with sensitive skin may experience swelling and light bruising after HIFU treatment, which is completely normal and should fade within a few days. Some patients also feel sore around the jawline and cheeks the next day after treatment. This is a sign that the HIFU treatment is working as collagen synthesis process has begun. Another possible side effect is temporary numbness on areas treated with HIFU. This is because micro thermal damage produced in the skin tissue can cause nerve irritation. As the nerve heals, the numbing sensation will fade away as well.

These symptoms may linger on for up to four weeks, however symptoms is known to resolve on its own as the body produces more collagen. When properly administered by a trained professional, there has been no reports of long term complications from HIFU treatments.

As with every other aesthetic procedures, patient results differ and some may see more significant results than others. Collagen building works inside the body and is meant to create subtle changes in a person’s appearance for a natural, healthy and fresh-faced look. Depending on the laxity of your skin, you will be able to see progressive results up to 6 months. For starters, your skin elasticity will improve tremendously. You should be able to see pores shrinking, as well as laugh lines, wrinkles and double chin receding by the first month. Overall speaking, results should last between 4 to 6 months. After that, 3 to 6 sessions at a monthly interval are recommended for maintenance.
