Dermal filler treatments are on the rise as the go-to beauty procedure for eliminating aging signs. Gone are the days where plastic surgery was the only option of improving your looks! With its minimally invasive procedure, patients can see instant results without going under the knife.

Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers commonly consist of hyaluronic acid. It is a gel-like substance that is naturally present in the human body as well, which makes it extremely safe to use. Hyaluronic acid is coveted for its ability to retain moisture and to keep dermal tissues moist and lubricated. When used in fillers, it adds volume to the skin once it is injected, creating a hydrated and plumped look.

In the beginning, fillers were used to treat wrinkles and sagging skin caused by natural aging. In recent years however, fillers have been increasingly used to contour and augment facial features such as sculpting higher cheekbones, sharper jaw and higher nose bridge. Depending on the area to be treated, different consistency of fillers are used. For instance, firm fillers are used to shape and create volume, while moderately firm fillers are used to reduce and smooth out wrinkles and creases. Finally, soft fillers are mostly used around more sensitive face areas such as the eyes and lips. A cannula or needle can both be used to inject fillers into the face, depending on the area to be treated and depth of injection. The difference between a needle and a cannula is that needles have a sharp tip while a cannula’s tip is blunt. The advantage of using a cannula is the reduced risk of penetrating any surrounding blood vessels.

At Joyre Medical & Aesthetic Clinic, we use Teosyal and Juvederm brand of fillers. Popular areas for filler treatments are the nose, cheeks, chin, lips and laugh lines. These facial areas produce the most noticeable improvements before and after dermal fillers.

Nose fillers are the most requested body area for filler treatment, as it can yield results similar to nose surgery, minus the pain and long recovery period. Fillers are injected into parts of the nose that are lacking. For example if you have a flat nose bridge, fillers will be injected into that area to make your nose bridge appear higher. For round nose tips, fillers can be injected into the tip of the nose to make it look sharper and more prominent. Other uses of fillers include filling in depressed nose areas and smoothing out irregular nose bumps.

As we age, we lose fat and collagen in our face, causing our cheeks to look sunken. By injecting around the cheekbones, cheek fillers makes the cheek appear fuller and also helps in lifting the skin to reduce wrinkles and fine lines. Cheeks fillers can be used to create more defined cheekbones.

Receding chins is another common word for most Asians, as Asians tend to have a round and short chins. Fortunately, chin fillers can be injected into the area for a sharper and more defined chin.

Laugh lines are often the first signs of aging. Dermal fillers reduce laugh lines by filling in wrinkles, creases, nasolabial folds and jowls. The before and after result is dramatically smoother and more youthful looking skin.

Our lips are also not spared from signs of aging. It is common for people to find their lips becoming thinner and see fine lines developing around the lip area. Dermal fillers can help rejuvenate your lips naturally for a more plumped up look.

Doctor’s Consultation

Before any filler treatments, our doctors will have a short consultation with you to discuss your skin concerns, skin goals and advise the type of filler that is suitable for you. When you are ready, a topical numbing cream will be applied to the treatment area and left on for 15 to 30 minutes. This is to reduce any bruising and discomfort during the treatment. Once the numbing cream is washed off, the fillers will be injected into your skin and massaged to achieve the desired shape. Treatment time is approximately 30 minutes. You might feel a mild ant-bite sensation as the fillers are injected into your skin. After treatment, it is normal to experience some swelling and minor bruising. These side effects will subside in a few days as the fillers gradually set in. At around 14 days, fillers usually have fully settled into the tissue. This process may be faster as certain fillers have a more cohesive nature and blend easily into the skin.

Dermal fillers set in pretty quickly into the skin after injection and results are immediately visible. You should be able to see changes in volume and shape of your face before and after dermal fillers, but not too obvious that it looks unnatural.

After filler treatments, you should avoid touching the injection sites to allow the fillers to set in properly. If you have done nose fillers, try not to wear sunglasses for the first 3 days as the extra weight might affect the shape of the fillers. In that same token, facials, waxing, lasers and other aesthetic treatments to the face should be postponed for a few weeks. If you are experiencing swelling, applying an ice pack to the area daily can assist in reducing swelling. Generally, prolonged sun exposure and alcohol should be avoided for the first 24 hours. Alcohol is a diuretic that will draw away water from the body, and will affect the results of the fillers. Likewise, UV rays from sunlight destroys hyaluronic acid, so be sure to wear sunscreen daily.

Filler Advantage

A huge advantage of fillers is that it is completely reversible. In the event you are unsatisfied with the end result, doctors can dissolve the fillers by injecting hyaluronidase into the skin. Hyaluronidases is an enzyme found in the human body as well, and its function is to break down hyaluronic acid. Otherwise, fillers gradually get broken down by the body and can last anywhere between 6 to 18 months. The longevity of fillers may vary from one person to another as everyone has a different metabolism rate. For long term maintenance, patients are advised to go for filler top-ups before the fillers have all been absorbed by the body.

If you are thinking of getting a filler treatment, do remember that everyone’s face is different and hence the before and after results may differ for everyone. When it comes to fillers, the doctor’s skill and clinical experience is key to achieving a subtle and natural enhanced look. Less is more in this case, and if necessary, you can always request to top up more fillers.
