HIFU facelift has been touted as the latest ground-breaking alternative treatment to surgical facelift to reverse aging. This treatment has the ability to take years of your appearance by lifting and tightening skin around the face, neck and other body areas.
How does HIFU work?
As the name High Intensity Frequency Ultrasound suggests, ultrasound energy is emitted into the skin that targets the deeper dermis layers of the skin. Instead of penetrating the skin, HIFU passes the skin surface and heats up the structural skin tissue layers. As a result, micro injuries are produced under the skin that sets off the body’s self-healing response, which produces more collagen to heal the wound. The brow, chin and neck areas are the body areas that benefit most from HIFU treatment. A single session of HIFU can deliver visible but subtle toning of jawline, wrinkles and fine line reduction, lifting of cheeks, eyebrows and eyelids as well as overall smoothening of sagging skin.
HIFU facelift is regarded as mostly safe, as certified ultrasound technology and machines are used for this treatment and administered by professional doctors. It is preferred over surgical facelift due to its low downtime, zero incision, scarring and cheaper cost compared to going under the knife.
As a rule, HIFU treatment is non-invasive, and hence pain during treatment is minimal. The areas to be treated will first be cleansed to remove makeup and other skincare products, then a numbing cream may be applied to reduce discomfort. Next, ultrasound gel will be applied all over the face and body areas to be treated. The gel works to increase the effects of HIFU and smoothen the overall process. As the treatment starts, you may feel uncomfortable as the hand piece goes over sensitive areas. Should the discomfort become unbearable, feel free to inform your doctor so that they can decrease the strength of the ultrasound.
Things to Remember
Before starting HIFU treatment, you should also avoid skin irritating chemicals as this may interfere with the treatment. This extends to antibiotics as well, because certain antibiotics may cause you to become more sensitive to light. If you are currently on a course of antibiotics, it is highly likely that treatment will have to be postponed at least 2 weeks until the completion of the antibiotics course.
You should also ensure that you are in a healthy state before engaging in HIFU treatment. HIFU treatment is also unable commence if you are down with fever or cold sores.
On the day of treatment, refrain from applying makeup and moisturizer. If you have a low pain tolerance, please inform your doctor and the treatment strength will be tailored to your comfort level.
After the treatment is done, proper aftercare steps should be taken to help your skin heal well. The aftercare is just as important to maintain the results from HIFU. You should follow your doctor’s recommendation strictly to increase the effective of HIFU. Proper care can reduce the risk of adverse effects and amplify your results so you are not wasting your money.
In terms of skincare, you can follow up with your regular skincare regime immediately after treatment. However, try to avoid using skincare products with ingredients that may irritate skin for at least 24 hours. Examples of skin irritant ingredients are glycolic acid, benzoyl peroxide and retinol. Exposure to the sun should be kept to a minimum. If you are unable to avoid the sun, wearing sunblock is encouraged. UV light from the sun destroys collagen and may induce hyperpigmentation post treatment.
Post-treatment, you should stay away from alcohol. Alcohol will be processed by the liver, which is already tasked with eliminating damaged fat cells. Hence alcohol has a bad effect on the liver. Instead, you should be drinking more water. Water can help flush out waste materials from the body and increase the rate of collagen synthesis.
Things you may experience after treatment
Your skin may feel extra sensitive after HIFU treatment. Many patients report experiencing redness and swelling after the procedure, but most of these symptoms are temporary. It is advisable to avoid scratching your skin while it is tender as you may risk damaging the skin surface. It would also be in your interest to take more cold showers and avoid hot baths, steam rooms and saunas. Although it may be tempting to put an ice pack near the swollen area, it is not advisable as this may interfere with the treatment.
In some rare occasions, some patients may feel numbness or bruising, but rest assured these symptoms usually subside within a few days. In most cases, you should be able to resume your daily activities right after treatment.
Typically, you should start seeing results as early as 3 to 4 weeks post treatment. Your skin elasticity and texture will continue to improve up to 6 months as more collagen is produced. Recent studies have shown 66% of patients who had HIFU treatment done on their face and neck reported improvement in their overall appearance in just 3 months. These improvements should last anytime between 6 months to a year, depending on the patient’s aging rate. Your doctor will advise you on the touch up treatments needed to maintain the results.
